This is a unique second flush black tea from the Rohini Tea Estate in Darjeeling, India. It is celebrated for its distinctive taste, combining musky and floral notes with a hint of pepper. Known as Peppery Black Tea, it features a robust, peppery flavor. The tea is made from Camellia Sinensis leaves that are plucked, withered, rolled, and fully fermented.
Such unique second flush black tea are found only in Rohini Teas. The dry leaves are brown and black with abundant golden tips and a chilly fragrance. This Gopaldhara Teas ‘Peppery Black Second Flush 2024’ (Royal Series) has to be one of the finest Darjeeling you would ever taste. It has a robust fruity, peppery flavour, in sharp contrast to the faint floating aroma of first flush. The dry tea uncurls itself into whole leaves and dainty buds and then magic happens.
It’s vintage Darjeeling on a rainy grey afternoon.
Sort of steep at ₹515 for 50 gm. But worth the price thrice over like most Gopaldhara high altitude teas.
‘Peppery’ is now part of my prized Darjeeling collection. Will try and make it last as long as I can and then replenish if Gopaldhara has any left from the 2024 summer harvest. Or wait till next summer.
Only negative is that ‘Peppery’ comes in a paper box. A tin caddy is any day preferable, especially for high end teas.
PS: I began journeying into the story of Darjeeling tea while recuperating in isolation from a lobectomy in the summer of 2023. It was a random choice, triggered by a generous gift of The Hillcart Tales fine Darjeeling tea from my school friend Santosh Ojha.
The long lonely days were spent reading about and sipping Darjeeling tea. That journey led me to discovering various kinds of Darjeeling and learning about their distinctive taste and flavour.
